A Simple Guide to SIM Swapping
Your phone number is connected to more of your personal information than you may realize. From online banking and email to social media and payment apps, your phone can be an important part of how you access and protect your accounts.
That’s why SIM swapping is an important scam to be aware of.
SIM swapping, also known as SIM hijacking, happens when a fraudster convinces a mobile phone provider to transfer your phone number to a new SIM card controlled by the fraudster. To do this, the fraudster may first gather personal information about you through phishing, social media, or other methods and then impersonate you to your mobile provider.
Once they gain control of your phone number, they may be able to intercept calls, text messages, and security codes. This can potentially give them access to online accounts, password resets, and financial information.
Warning Signs to Watch For
A SIM swap may happen without you immediately realizing it. Watch for:
- Suddenly losing cell service or being unable to make calls or send texts
- Unexpected messages from your mobile carrier
- Alerts about changes to your banking, email, or social media accounts
- Being locked out of an account or noticing suspicious activity
If you experience these warning signs, contact your mobile carrier right away and check your financial and online accounts for unusual activity.
How to Protect Yourself
A few simple steps can help strengthen your account security:
- Use multi-factor authentication: When possible, use an authenticator app or biometric authentication instead of relying only on text messages.
- Protect your phone number: Ask your mobile carrier about SIM locks or other account security features.
- Be careful with personal information: Avoid sharing sensitive information through unexpected emails, texts, calls, or social media.
- Monitor your accounts: Keep an eye out for unfamiliar transactions, login alerts, or password changes.
