This commitment was on full display at our latest Bite of Reality event held at the Walker College Foundation, an event that provides a full simulation of what its like to be making financial choices in the real world with credit scores, monthly expenses, and that fickle finger of fate!

The Genesis of Bite of Reality

A few years ago, the need for a comprehensive financial literacy program in Walker County became increasingly evident. The members of Leadership Walker County recognized that financial education was a critical component in fostering a stronger, more resilient community. Many young adults were stepping into the world without the necessary knowledge to manage their finances effectively, leading to poor financial decisions that could have long-term negative impacts.

It was clear that something needed to be done, and that’s when AlaTrust Credit Union stepped in.

AlaTrust's Commitment to Financial Literacy

When Leadership Walker County approached us with the idea of developing a financial literacy program, Bite of Reality, we knew this was an opportunity to make a significant difference. AlaTrust Credit Union decided not only to support the initiative but to take on the complete organization, financial costs, and execution of every event . We recognized that by investing in the financial education of our youth, we were investing in the future of our entire community.

The Bite of Reality program was born out of this collaboration, designed to provide students with a hands-on, interactive experience that simulates real-life financial scenarios. The goal was to teach them essential skills such as budgeting, managing credit, and making informed financial choices.

Our Event at Walker College Foundation

The Walker College Foundation is a nonprofit community-funded scholarship program that has awarded more than 3 million dollars in scholarship funds to students in Walker County. The Foundation was excited to offer our Bite of Reality Program to their students to aid them in their financial knowledge. It is wonderful to see our community take an interest in utilizing the resources we have provided to help their students have a brighter future.

At our recent event, students were given a “life scenario” complete with a job, salary, family, and debt. They then had to navigate a series of financial decisions, including purchasing necessities, managing unexpected expenses, and balancing their budget. It’s a real eye-opener for many participants, who often find themselves having to make tough choices – just like in real life.

The Impact of Bite of Reality

Since the inception of Bite of Reality, hundreds of students have participated in the program, each walking away with a better understanding of how to manage their finances. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many students expressing gratitude for the opportunity to learn in such a practical, engaging way.

But the impact of Bite of Reality goes beyond the participants. It’s about building a financially literate community where individuals are equipped to make sound decisions that benefit not only themselves but their families and the wider community.
